Fredenic Hunter on the power of words:

Strange this business of making a living from words. Very, very strange. Poets are craftsmen who cherish words. They use them like lenses. They muse on the words, put them under the kind of pressure the earth exerts in forming a diamond. They choose words with awe, slice them, polish them, they set each word in its line. They scrutinize its composition, they make it rhythmical. They anchor each line in its stanza, each stanza into the whole.

And, after all that care, and anchoring, their word concoction flies! It hits your brain... explodes inside your head. Firework insight! And you are never quite the same – at least for an hour.

Look to this day:
For it is life, the very life of life.
In its brief course
Lie all the verities and realities of your existence.
The bliss of growth,
The glory of action,
The splendour of achievement
Are but experiences of time.

For yesterday is but a dream
And tomorrow is only a vision;
And today well-lived, makes
Yesterday a dream of happiness
And every tomorrow a vision of hope.
Look well therefore to this day;
Such is the salutation to the ever-new dawn!

- Excerpts from Salutation to the Dawn - Kalidasa, Sanskrit Poet & Dramatist
